The Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp possesses an authentic Gossaert
24 August 2010
Restoration has revealed that
Portrait of a Man, a painting that had previously been attributed to a follower of the
Flemish Renaissance artist
Jan Gossaert (1478-1532), was in fact painted by the Master himself. The portrait
is part of the collection of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. It wil soon appear in the
streets of New York as the posterboy of the exhibition
Man, Myth and Sensual Pleasures: Jan Gossaert's Renaissance at The The Metropolitan Museum
of Art. 'The Met' recently requested a loan of the painting for the exhibition. At that time the
panel was still in very poor condition The original was barely visible through the thick layers of
yellowed varnish, discoloured retouches and overpainted background.
Maryan Ainsworth, curator of the exhibition, therefore proposed to have the
painting restored at 'the Met' in preparation of the show. As a result of the treatment, the
quality of the portrait is now fully apparent. Subsequently Ainsworth, a Gossaert expert, has been
able to confirm that the work was painted by the Master himself.
