Jan Gossaert’s Renaissance

National Gallery, London
23 February 2011 – 30 May 2011

Last fall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York hosted the exhibition Man, Myth and Sensual Pleasures: Jan Gossaert’s Renaissance. In the meantime, the exhibition has travelled to the National Gallery in London, a museums that has one of the largest and finest collections of Gossaert’s paintings in the world. The Flemish Renaissance artist Jan Gossaert was a pivotal figure between the old medieval tradition of Jan van Eyck and the Baroque art of Peter Paul Rubens. He was the first artist in de Low Countries to depict erotic nudes in historical and mythological scenes. For this exhibition some paintings from the collection of the KMSKA, such as Madonna at the fountain by Jan van Eyck and Portrait of a Man, travelled to New York and then to London. A couple of months ago, restoration revealed that the latter, previously attributed to a follower of Gossaert, was in fact painted by the master himself.

The video below offers more information on the restoration of Portrait of a Man.
