This publication offers insights into the lively arts scene during the interwar period, ranging from post-impressionism via abstraction and expressionism to the mixed forms characteristic of that time, with works by Jules Schmalzigaug, Marthe Donas, Oscar and Floris Jespers, Edmond Van Dooren, Jozef Peeters, Felix De Boeck, Jan Kiemeneij, Jos Leonard, Paul Joostens, Prosper De Troyer, Marcel-Louis Baugniet and Ossip Zadkine. In addition to two introductory essays, a sequential analysis of individual works maps out a reconstruction of this ‘forgotten’ period in Flemish art history. 1925 serves as the pivotal point in the pursuit of a purely visual language, after which the various developments that had resulted in abstract art began to surface in new mutated forms. It is within that context, supported by new research, that this selection from the KMSKA collection is reassessing the significance of this period.

This is the second volume in the series Rubens Unveiled, in which the Rubens Research Project of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp shares the fruits of its research with a wider public. It follows a first book on Rubens's painting technique by Nico Van Hout and Arnout Balis. In this second publication Valérie Herremans explores the physical, spiritual and cultural context of several major Rubens paintings in the Antwerp museum's collection, drawn from four once-prominent houses of worship in the city. The Norbertine Abbey of St Michael, the Franciscan Church, and the churches of the Calced and the Discalced Carmelites were all suppressed during the French occupation that began in 1794. The book describes the history of these religious institutions and reveals how they looked, inside and out. We learn about the works they owned by Rubens, the patrons who commissioned them, the paintings' original locations, and the other important works of art that adorned the same churches. Extensive illustrations and detailed reconstructions offert a realistic glimpse of magnificent interiors that were among Antwerp's most beautiful. Closing Time. Jan Vanriet

For the exhibition Closing Time contemporary artist Jan Vanriet set out a route in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. Vanriet combines his own work with pieces from the museum's collection of old and modern masters. These works have a connection through content or style. The surprising symbiosis of the museum’s pearls with Vanriet’s oeuvre reveals an impressive contemporary story on human deficiency. Maarten Doorman and Eric Rinckhout wrote a captivating text to accompany Closing Time. Works from the exhibition and Herman Selleslags' images illustrate the publication.

These do not only include full pictures of Rubens' paintings, but numerous close-ups, macro photographs, infrared and X-ray images and photos of paint samples as well. No effort has been spared to represent both the subtlety and the bravura of the master's hand.

In the spring of 2009 the KMSKA presented the exhibition Goya, Redon, Ensor. Grotesque paintings and drawings. The grotesque depictions of these three eccentric artists were the starting point of the exhibition. Francisco de Goya (1746-1828), Odilon Redon (1840-1916) and James Ensor (1860-1949) were, without any doubt, the pioneers of modern art. The publication presents a rare series of etchings by Goya, drawings by Redon and a selection of Ensor's masterpieces from the collection of the KMSKA. It also treats a number of loans from museums in Belgium and abroad.
Diepe fontein (Deep Fountain)

Since September 2006 the Leopold De Waelplaats in Antwerp has a fountain of its own. Although, in a way, the Deep Fountain by Spanish artist Cristina Iglesias is not a fountain in the general meaning of the word. Perhaps that is the reason why it attracts the attention of everyone who passes it. One moment, the fountain is filled with water that reflects the stately façade of the museum. The next it exposes the beauty of its bottom. In between are the tides that fill and later empty the mysterious water source.
