Anselm Kiefer

print

Date 23/10/2010 - 27/03/2011

In the autumn of 2010 three major Antwerp museum partners joined forces for a unique exhibition featuring contemporary artist Anselm Kiefer.

It was the first time that the leading post-war German artist Anselm Kiefer (°1945) was exhibited on this scale in Antwerp. The exhibition displayed a selection of Kiefer's works from the 1980s to the present. Aside from the better known themes that populate his work, such as the recollection of memories from his country's history, the Holocaust and the bewildering aftermath of World War Two, his profound interest in religion, mythology and literature has been explored. Taken together, these major works represent Kiefer's expressive language, re-invoking historical memories through materials such as ash, earth, iron and wood.

An extensive collection in an empty museum

The works on exhibit are part of the extensive collection belonging to the German Grothe family, who has been passionately collecting contemporary German art since the 1970s. Starting October 4th the KMSKA will prepare for major renovations and will therefore no longer show its permanent collection. The empty museum was the perfect backdrop for Kiefer's monumental works.

Anselm Kiefer is a collaboration between the Antwerp City Museums, the Antwerp Royal Museum of Fine Arts (KMSKA) and the Antwerp Museum of Modern Art (M HKA). In cooperation with 'Die Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e.V. Bonn'.
