The second exhibition in the series highlighting KMSKA's collection of modern art focused on Dutch art from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp holds an extensive collection of Dutch art that includes not only work by Old Masters such as Frans Hals and Rembrandt, but also a rich and varied ensemble of over two hundred pieces from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
From Appel to Willink
The exhibition The MODERNS. Art from the Netherlands – the second in a series highlighting KMSKA's collection of modern art – showcased fifty paintings, watercolours and drawings from the museum's holdings. Together, they told a story of modern art in the Netherlands from 1850 to the present day. They also painted a picture of the artistic relationships that connect the Netherlands and Belgium. The exhibition further explained how KMSKA's collection of Dutch modern art came to be. Art from the Netherlands featured work by, among others, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, George Hendrik Breitner, Vincent Van Gogh, Carel Willink and Karel Appel. Separately and collectively, the items displayed testified to the quality and richness of Dutch art of the 19th and 20th centuries.
