An exhibition on the oppressive and relieving intensity of art.
Gorge(l) was a group exhibition that was not developed from a predetermined theme or concept. Neither did it present or pass a linear (art-historical) overview. The works were selected because of their intensity and the fact that they were 'floating' between oppression and relief, between something that emerges and fades again, between bottling up and expansiveness, between something that shrinks and expands, between something that opens and closes, between breathing in and breathing out, between something that goes up and comes down again. Visitors experienced the feeling between 'oppression' and 'relief' through works of art from artists including James Ensor, Victor Hugo, Frida Kahlo, Louise Bourgeois, Thierry De Cordier and Marlène Dumas.
By the throat
The title of the exhibition contains the words 'gorge' and 'gurgle'. Like the French 'gorge' (throat) and the English 'gorge' (crevice, cleft), the Middle-Dutch 'gorgel' is derived from the Latin word 'gurgulio' and means 'throat, larynx, neck'. Both the sense of oppression and the sense of relief are situated in the throat. Gorge(l) displayed art that takes you by the artistic throat in many different ways.
