In the spring of 2012, the Rubens project team is presenting its latest research results at the Rockox House Museum in Antwerp.
Due to the ongoing renovation work at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA), the Rubens research team is ‘acting on location’ at the Rockox House Museum for the remainder of the year. The focus in the team's latest presentation is on the Triumphal Chariot of Kallo, one of the most intriguing oil sketches by Rubens in the KMSKA collection. The researchers provide details about the historical context of the painting, a famous victory over the Dutch in the Battle of Kallo (1638) during the Eighty Years War. But the main focus is on the iconography of the sketch, which is compared with the pictorial tradition of earlier allegorical triumphal cars. The team also analyses the meaning of the various characters on the car, who bear a striking resemblance to figures in previous sketches by the Master. Finally, attention is paid to the 'Ommegang', the annual festive procession through Antwerp for which Rubens designed the Triumphal Chariot as a float.
