KMSKA LATE - Curator tour - Guy Vandenbranden in the European avant-garde

Category:

Guided tour

Date:

14 January 2027 from 19:00 to 20:00
A century after his birth, Guy Vandenbranden (1926-2014) is given a dedicated space at KMSKA. In the Print Room, curator Lisa van Gerven guides you through the artist’s evolution from his expressionist beginnings to his role as a pioneer of geometric abstraction. His work is characterised by clear compositions in which colour, line and form exist in perfect balance.

Curator Lisa van Gerven leads you through the presentation, explaining how Vandenbranden developed his own constructivist visual language, inspired by artists such as Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian and Victor Vasarely.

Along the way, you will discover why he began working with industrial materials and how his precision was closely linked to his interest in modern architecture. His work is presented alongside that of contemporaries including Jef Verheyen, Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni and François Morellet.

You will see how Vandenbranden, through groups such as Art Abstrait, Formes and the International Working Group for Constructivism, remained in constant dialogue with the European avant-garde. Although he was never officially part of the ZERO movement, his oeuvre is closely connected to it. This tour provides both the context and the stories behind the works, leaving you with a fresh perspective on abstract art.
