KMSKA LATE Talks - Karin Hanssen in collaboration with Sofie Van De Velde Gallery

LATE Talks is a series of conversations with promising artists, in collaboration with prominent art galleries.
At KMSKA, the focus of the permanent collection lies on the Old and Modern Masters. In addition, the museum also excels with a wide range of temporary exhibitions. These keep a finger on the pulse of current movements in the world and the spirit of the times.
KMSKA offers a platform to promising artists through these conversations. Old and modern art serves as a source of inspiration in their artistic practice.
For this edition, programmer and author Siska Baeck engages in a conversation with Karin Hanssen, whose solo exhibition OHNE is on view at Sofie Van De Velde Gallery until 15.2.2026.
Karin Hanssen
Karin Hanssen (°1960, Antwerp) is a leading Belgian painter who, as a female artist, was part of the new Flemish painting generation, a group of male painters. She lives and works in Antwerp and has developed, since the 1990s, a rich body of paintings and drawings with a critical view on time, society, and social relations, often inspired by art history, photography from the 1950s–1970s, literature, and sociological sources. Her work explores, through the interplay between past and present, themes such as gender constructions, the voyeuristic gaze and looking, human interactions in public and private spaces, and social determinism. Hanssen often works in cycles and builds her visual language in a layered and considered way, with a philosophical and pictorial depth that rewards prolonged looking. Her work is exhibited nationally and internationally and is included in public and private collections. She has written several essays on the historical discrimination of female visual artists, created a digital database, and launched an online platform to promote this group. In 2016, she obtained her PhD in the Arts and became a member of the KVAB, Class of Arts.
