Les Boëchelles. Two Walloon Peasant Children
Léon Frederic
In the last quarter of the 19th century, a number of Belgian artists are concerned with the fate of the common people. Léon Frédéric is one of them. He liked to visit the Ardennes, more for the people than for nature. The artist was able to observe these girls attentively and then paint them in a surprisingly sober manner. The bashful, uninhibited look of the youngest girl contrasts sharply with the shy glance of the older sister. The tender play of hands forms the centre of the painting. The girls posed anonymously. Based on the portrait of Elodie Lamotte in the KMSKB collection, they could recently be identified as the sisters Aline and Elodie Lamotte from Nafraiture.
